Douglas Island Pink & Chum Inc. (DIPAC) is a private non-profit organization which manages two salmon hatcheries in the Juneau area to produce salmon for the common property fisheries of northern southeast Alaska. Macaulay Salmon Hatchery releases approximately 120 million chum fry, 1 million Chinook smolt, and 1 million coho smolt annually for domestic commercial and sport fisheries enhancement. Snettisham Salmon Hatchery produces 9.5 million sockeye smolt/fry for domestic programs, and up to 11 million sockeye fry annually for transboundary river fisheries enhancement. DIPAC also manages the Ladd Macaulay Visitor Center and welcomes up to 100,000 visitors a year through the facility.
The goal of DIPAC is to sustain and enhance valuable salmon resources of the State of Alaska for the economic, social, and cultural benefit of all citizens, and to promote public understanding of Alaska's salmon resources and salmon fisheries through research, education, and tourism. Description:
The Maintenance Engineer Assistant (MEA) works under the general direction of the Maintenance Engineer and will assist in the execution of projects and tasks as needed. This is a skilled maintenance position. The MEA works five days per week, with regular scheduled shifts including Monday through Friday 8AM to 5PM. The Maintenance Assistant will, at times, be required to work alternative schedules deemed necessary by the Maintenance Engineer or Operations Manager to provide coverage for holidays and other scheduling conflicts. As this position is key to providing continuous personnel presence at the hatchery, reliable work attendance and scheduling flexibility are critical.
The Maintenance Engineer Assistant is a permanent/salaried/overtime exempt full-time employee.
Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Help plan and carry out a wide array of building and equipment repair, maintenance, and improvement tasks. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, interior and exterior scraping and sanding in preparation for painting, painting, carpentry, drywall repair, grounds keeping, tending flower beds, snow plowing, snow shoveling, and various cleaning tasks.
• Perform vehicle and watercraft maintenance and repair tasks.
• Perform equipment maintenance and installations, metal fabrication, plumbing and electrical systems and components upgrades and installations.
• Be responsible for snow removal by the direction of the Maintenance Engineer and Operations Manager.
• On occasion, provide janitorial services when other maintenance staff are unavailable.
• Open or close the facility when needed and be responsible for completing morning or evening rounds to verify the state of all critical hatchery systems.
• Cover duties of Maintenance Engineer when on leave – including ordering supplies, purchasing supplies, responding to emails, and scheduling tasks for evening maintenance staff.
• At all times while on duty, be ready to respond to, and to aid in the resolution of, hatchery-related alarms, emergencies and equipment issues.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• 3 years’ experience in general building maintenance.
• The ability to work with minimal supervision, follow directions, and complete tasks and projects in a timely manner.
• Must have significant knowledge of building and equipment maintenance and repair practices and good attention to detail.
• Desirable skills include detailed painting, carpentry, and grounds keeping as well as welding, mechanical, drywall repair and painting, electrical systems, plumbing, and heating and ventilation systems.
• Must possess mechanical skills pertaining to pump repair, vehicle maintenance, small engine service and repair, outboard motors, and skiffs.
• Must possess or be able to learn project management skills. The ability to complete a project from draft design phase to prep work, to purchasing to completion and clean up is desired, but can be taught to the right candidate.
• Must be able to obtain an Alaska driver’s license. A job offer for this position is contingent upon a clean motor vehicle record for DIPAC's drivers’ insurance approval.
• Ability to pass a background check is mandatory.
Salary and Benefits:
